First Steps was formed in 2000 by two experienced geoscientists who had worked for many years with geotechnical and environmental engineers, and other scientists, both in the UK and the continent.
It covers Learned and Professional matters, including Chartership and CPD, and links to the appropriate institutions. It also includes references to relevant Regulators. Education and Public Awareness are also covered
Since then our services have also been requested for training and consulting, and for public awareness in science and engineering.
First Steps retains its technical edge by engaging in research and consulting, and writing technical papers to be published in geotechnical journals, and books. It welcomes collaboration with academic and industrial partners.

Employment

Having been formed by experienced geoscientist, First Steps is unlike many agencies placing candidates. Our advice is technically informed and impartial, and candidates once placed are not contacted again. Our approach helps both employees and employers and further information of the benefits of working with us can be found in the appropriate section of the web page.

Courses & Training

One day, two day and three day courses are available and can be provided in-house if desired. In addition First Steps has sole rite for the Geotechnical Industries Post Graduate Specialised Award which offers a National Certificate approved and regulated by the UK Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. All courses are hands-on and contain substantial elements of practical work.

In response to the requests from the many who have attended our courses we now produce not only a section on the web for news about courses, publications, developments involving First Steps (such as the London Basin Forum) and other services available, but also circulate this news as a Newsletter to those who subscribe to receive it.

Geology@Work

This section is dedicated to airing those aspects of geoscience and its work in the engineering, environmental and related disciplines. It covers Learned and Professional matters, including Chartership and links to the appropriate institutions. It also includes references to relevant Regulators, as well as manufactures and suppliers of geo-products. Education and Public Awareness are also covered.

Geosciences and geo-engineering provide much of the raw material that we use as a society and most of the infrastructure which enables society to work.
