“The Geotechnical Industries Postgraduate Specialised Award” is a National Certificate approved by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority of the Government, and supervised by a Recognised and Accredited UK Government Qualifications Regulator. It is for individuals, possibly like you, who have a first degree but no post-graduate academic qualification such as an MSc. Its standard is pre-MSc in as much as those going on to an MSc will find the tools acquired of invaluable assistance; those not progressing to an MSc will find the tools acquired essential for professional development within employment and towards Chartership.

The Award encompasses ten modules each of three days, five of which are core modules and five are electives, details of which are outlined below. Fifty percent of each module is practical hands-on work either spread out over three days or in part concentrated as a specific exercise conducted under supervision on the third day. The course work will require participants to pull together the skills acquire and apply them to a given task.

The studies for the Award are intended to provide the basic tools required for those working in geotechics; e.g. map reading, construction of cross sections for geotechnics and groundwater flow, rock and mineral identification, data plotting, basic mechanics, water level interpretation and the like; details will be posted under the Quick Link for “The Geotechnical Industries Postgraduate Specialised Award” and will be posted over the coming weeks.

To obtain the award candidates have to compile the work done in these modules as a file of practical work. They will then be examined on the contents of this file by two senior geotechnical engineers, one a Chartered geologist and the other a Chartered engineer; persons of the sort you would expect to find at management level in your company. They will discuss the contents of your file with you and you will be expected to answer questions that arise on the basis of the file presented. The standard set is that which could be expected from a young graduate who has been employed in the geotechnical industry for about two years.

Experienced personnel can also be fast tracked through the system if they wish, either by attending only those modules they feel they need, submitting their file of work as described above or, if they need attend none, by submitting a file of work completed during employment under the headings detailed in the relevant modules.

Modules will be delivered throughout the year and their frequency will depend on the number of subscribers to the scheme, classes being limited in size to enable personal tuition.

There will be a charge for Registration and for the Exam; each module will be charged at the usual daily rate for our courses.
