A brief description of the requirements for the Award
www.firststepsgeo.co.uk/postgraduategeotechnicalaward.html
Each student should complete a 30 day programme of studies grouped as ten 3-day taught Modules, taken over an unspecified period governed by the personal circumstances of the student. Six Core subjects and four electives must be completed. Each Module, when completed successfully, would be recognised by a Certificate of Completion from First Steps.
The Specialised Award is obtained by satisfying a Board of Examiners, by submission of a file completed work and at interview, that the basic competences desired for have been acquired.
Modules will be provided at least once a year and more frequently if numbers require so that, in theory, a student can complete the programme in 12 months. Experience suggests that most students will require at least two years to complete the programme.
The order and sequence in which Modules are studied will not be specified so that studies can be followed when a student has time to do so, but advice will be given on competences best obtained before a particular Module is taken even though the Modules will be fairly self-contained; it will be for the student to make up what work is required if Modules are taken out of recommended sequence. Ultimately the student has to satisfy the Board of Examiners that he or she has the competences expected and this will permit some to attain their award quickly; i.e. to be on a “fast-track”.
Any candidate who fails can apply to be examined again; there is no limit on the number of times an exam can be attempted although a fee will be charged and could be a disincentive.
