During my time as Course Co-ordinator for the
MSc in Engineering Geology at Imperial College, I interviewed hundreds of applicants and over the years it
has become increasingly clear to me that something should be done to
help young geoscientists gain their first employment and to help those
already in industry who, for one reason or another, are unable to attend a postgraduate university course. So I founded this Company with the help of my
colleague Christine Butenuth, with those thoughts in mind. First Steps is here to help geoscientists
and civil engineers, especially geotechnical engineers, make the most
of their talents and opportunities, no matter what they may be. To this
end we have responded to the growing need for training within an industry
suffering skills shortages, and are collaborating with a number of colleagues to provide courses
for professional development . I hope you find what we have to offer of
help, but do let us know if there is help you need which we do not provide at present.

Director of First
Steps Ltd.
As a co-founder of First Steps my aim is to help anyone find their
niche within their chosen subject. A niche where they like to be, are good at what they
do and feel fulfilled in what they are doing. To achieve this I have
ensured that First Steps will interview applicants whenever possible,
so that they can tell us what they like to do and what they would not
like to do; in some cases this enables us to offer courses to help them achieve their
aims. The courses we offer provide an opportunity to fill gaps which prevent you from entering
the employment you would wish to secure.
Many of those applying for positions in industry welcome the possibility of being trained further and have found this to be an advantage to career enhancement.
Employers are attracted to the way First Steps selects applicants for
them, as it is our rule never to forward someone we feel
is unsuitable for the task.
In addition to the courses we provide at various training centres, we also provide in-house training packages for companies and can
support their own in house training if they wish. Companies that do possess good in-house training not only retain their staff but also develop, and retain, a corporate body of knowledge.
