GLOSSOP LECTURE WORKSHOPS

Dr. Michael de Freitas will present the 9th Glossop lecture on 6th November in London. It is intended to provide four workshops in the weeks following the lecture so that aspects of the lecture of particular relevance to industry and academia can be further discussed in an informal forum. 2. We are continuously increasing the subjects available on our hands-on courses; if there is no tuition in a subject on which you need help then let us know; you are probably not the only one and could be the one who makes it apparent that this is a subject we can arrange to offer.

3. In Preparation: The following courses are being prepared:

Organising and managing site work: the key to guaranteeing Quality and Health & Safety (planned for October)

A course designed for young geotechnical engineers in contracting and consulting

Mechanical principles explained and illustrated by plotting data (planned for mid November)

Designed for those with no formal training in the mechanics commonly encountered in ground engineering

The value and use made of driller's information (planned for end of November)

A course for young supervising engineers and drillers

Right drilling for the job: converting specification to delivery

Designed for engineers specifiying ground investigation and for drillers

Chemical awareness for interfacing with EA documents and requirements

Designed for those with little or no formal training in chemistry

Sampling for contaminate studies

A course for those designing and executing an investigation of contaminated sites

Engineering Geomorphology

A course suitable for geologsits, geographers and engineers

4. In house training: If you would like any of the courses listed under "one day courses" on the web site to be an in house training course for your company please contact Christine Butenuth; click the button on the left "In-house training" . Should you have other training needs please let us know and we will try to help by organising a tailor made course for your requirements.

5. An NVQ for those working in Geotechnical Laboratories is now available; click the button on the left "NVQ in Laboratory Testing and Associated technical Activities (LATA)".

6. A useful Tract for those quantifying non-linear relationships, as often found in concentration plumes, and problems involving decay and time, with worked examples throughout.

7. It is now very easy for an employer to obtain a work permit for qualified personnel in geotechnics as geotechnics has been classified by HMG as a "shortage occupation".
