In engineering it was customary for groups that started as learned associations for the development of their subject to soon evolve into organisations that governed and directed the professional use of the skills they employed. Thus Professional institutions were born (see Professional Institutions); in practice these are both learned and professional bodies. The Geological Society of London is the learned society that will be most familiar to geoscientists. It is now 200 years old and remains dedicated to advancing the science of Geology. Over the last 30 years the Society has also been attending to the Professional needs of its learned Members and so it is also a Professional Society for those who wish to be Chartered Geologists.
